How to make Kimchi Fried Rice

김치볶음밥 만드는 방법

Kimchi fried rice (Kimchi Bokkeumbap, 김치볶음밥) is a popular and easy-to-make Korea dish. It includes a handful of basic ingredients, including rice, Kimchi (the ubiquitous and popular spicy pickled/fermented cabbage that is considered a national dish in its own right), scallions, eggs and, in this recipe, shrimp.     Ingredients (One Serving Size)

  • Scallion (1 ½ full scallions)
  • Kimchi (1 cup which is about 6 ounces)
  • You can buy Kimchi in the refrigerated section at Trader Joe's and at most other sizable grocery store chains.
    Sometimes kimchi is sold in vacuum packs at room temperature, but you must refrigerate it after opening.

  • Olive oil (2 ½ tablespoon)
  • Soy sauce (2 tablespoon)
  • Rice (3 cups cooked)
  • The best kind of rice for this is a white rice that holds together. Fore more about Korean style rice, please click HERE.
    I recommend a shorter-grain sushi-style rice over the more typical converted rice (which has longer grains) that one finds in store here.

  • Sesame oil (½ tablespoon)
  • Egg (1 egg)
  • Slivered Nori (roasted seaweed) for garnish
  • Sugar (½ tablespoon)
  • Shrimp (½ cup which is about 3 to 4 ounces)
  • Butter (3 tablespoons)
    (For shrimp)
  • Chopped garlic (1 tablespoon)
    (For shrimp)
  • Black pepper (1 teaspoon)
    (For shrimp)



Step 1.
Chop green scallions for making scallion oil.

※ Use a knife or cooking scissors; either is fine.



Step 2.
Chop Kimchi into half-inch bites.


Step 3.
Fry chopped scallions with olive oil.


Step 4.
Add chopped Kimchi into the fried scallions and stir. Add sugar and soy sauce.

Fry this mixture until the moisture boils off, leaving a hot, dry pan without burning the vegetables.



Step5.
Add the cooked kimchi mix into the steamed rice, and mix well.



Step 6.
Fry shrimp with butter, chopped garlic and black pepper in the other frying pan.

※ Chef's special tip: If you bought frozen shrimp (and you're over 21) immerse that shrimp in beer to help cut back on the freezer burn taste.



Step 7.
Add fried shrimp on Kimchi fried rice and mix.


Step 8.
Fry an egg and put it on the Kimchi fried rice.


Step 9.
EAT and ENJOY!!!
